IBRAHIM
Manuel Canelles e Ivan Crico
The project restores form and colour, through a stratification of different expressive codes (painting, theatre/cinema, photography, etc.) to a lost work by Géricault, L'uomo che guarda e contempla il mare, symbol of odysseus and shipwrecks, even existential ones, of which no iconographic evidence has been received, but of which only written documentation remains.
The margins of interpretation that the stories offer allow to translate the invisible lost and give the possibility to the painting to be reinvented, re-establishing a dialogue with contemporary reality, with the intent to problematize the concept of disappeared, according to the assumption that what has existed is always, through the filter of memory, also inevitably interpreted/reinterpreted.
Working on a work of which visual documentation does not survive leaves extremely wide, almost infinite margins of interpretation: the disappeared work becomes a pretext for working on subjects with which one would never have been confronted, and, above all, it becomes the starting point to start an investigation of which it is impossible in advance to hypothesize the developments.
